The owners have created a space where independent and interesting films can be seen, in a small and comfortable venue. When "The Bounty" was moored and exhibited in the Hudson in Newburgh, the Downing ran all 3 versions of the film: '34 with Leighton and Gable, '62 with Brando and Howard, and 84 with Gibson and Hopkins. The Downing is a special place.

I lOVE this cozy small theater; with the comfy chairs, it feels like you're in someone's den. The movie selections are always pretty great, either artistic or funny or classic. I don't remember ever being disappointed. I just saw The Big Sick and it made me laugh and cry the whole time. The homemade snacks served are inexpensive and delicious.

The Downing Film Center, is a Gem of the Hudson Valley! The owners, Brian and Sharron, make me feel welcomed from the second that they see me. They ask me how I am dong, and why they haven't seen me in a while. Their staff is very knowledgeable and welcoming, also. The Downing shows some great and riveting movies, from independent producers, that may not be shown on the larger Multi-Plexes.
Every movie that I have seen at the Downing has been great. Often after seeing a movie at the Downing, my curiosity will be piqued, and I will do some research on my own about either the characters, or a subject in the movie. Watching a movie here, is an enjoyable experience, as the theater is a very intimate setting. It is one level, with very comfortable chairs that recline, and can rock.
The Theatre can seat 55 people. There is free parking and the theater is Handicapped accessible. Also there are many restaurants nearby, and I have gotten something to eat prior to watching the movie. The theatre just got a new Digital projector, and screen, and now the sharpness and clarity of the movie is incredible.

My husband and I have been coming to the Downing since 2006. Over the years, we have truly come to appreciate this unique little venue. Brian and Sharon greet us like old friends and thoroughly enjoy discussing the featured movie or any topics that come up. The concession stand offers a wide variety of delectable delights. The theater itself has a private viewing feel to it.
The seats are comfy and make you feel like you're sitting in your own living room. If you enjoy watching independent films that don't usually make their way into mainstream theaters, this is the place for you!
